Today we feature Liva Savaiinaea, a senior Music Performance major from Paulsboro, NJ (Gloucester County). Liva’s favorite class was Collegium Musicum within Music Department taught by Dr. Lourin Plant. Liva was also a transfer from Rowan College of South Jersey.
Tell us a little about what the class is.
It is an ensemble open to all students where we explore music from medieval times to early baroque.
Share with us a few details on why this class was interesting or special to you.
Everyone in the class was not only able to freely express themselves, but there was a sense of camaraderie and unity. Not only that, but we were able to experience instruments that musical styles that are the foundation of classical music as we know it.
Is there anything else that made this class impactful?
Being able to meet some of my closest friends.
What makes this professor great?
Dr. Plant is not only invested in the music, but he is invested in his students as a whole. He always took the extra mile to make the class special. He truly cares about his students.
How did this class help to support your academic or personal growth, or your professional goals?
As a Music Performance major, it is extremely important for me to become well versed in all genres/eras of music. Having the experience from an ensemble that focused on an early genre of music is truly valuable.
What are your professional goals?
To obtain a spot as either a flute or piccolo player in an orchestra.
