Today we feature incoming transfer and first-generation college student Stephanie Berdugo-Hernandez from Rowan College at Burlington County. Stephanie will be commuting from Eastampton, NJ (Burlington County) and studying Biological Sciences.
Welcome to Rowan! Could you share with us one thing you are looking forward at Rowan University?
I am looking forward to continuing my education at Rowan University to finish up the 3 + 1 program toward my bachelor’s in Biology!
What is one hobby, activity, sport or club that you’re involved in that you’d like to continue at Rowan?
One hobby I love is volunteering and giving back to my community. I am currently involved in volunteering as a member of the Women’s League in Mt. Holly who help foster care children, low-income community members, nursing homes and food pantries. During the start of the pandemic I sewed and donated hundreds of masks to nursing homes, essential workers and healthcare workers who were in need of PPE. It was a very rewarding experience because I was able to give them some kind of protection against COVID-19 and keep them somewhat safe.
I am also a part of the HESAA [Higher Education Student Assistance Authority] Student Advisory Committee and HESAA Board, where I can use my voice to advocate for students and bring awareness to students of the financial aid programs that HESAA has to offer.
I am also an EOF student and was the first RCBC EOF Club President. I had the opportunity to travel to the state capitol in Trenton and I was able to speak to legislators about the importance and impact the EOF program has had on low-income students. It allowed us to network with other EOF students and most importantly have our voices heard in continuing the fight to support EOF programs. The EOF program has helped and motivated me into becoming the student that I am today and allowed me to be a part of many great opportunities. I was also a part of the Student Government Association as the 3+1 Liaison, which allowed me to met many new friends and be a part of many fun events!
Is there anything you’re hoping to discover about yourself at Rowan?
I am interested in studying abroad! I love to travel and learn about the culture of other countries. I am so excited that Rowan offers this opportunity to students!
What majors are you considering and why?
I am a Biology major and chose this major because since I was little I love helping others, which opened my eyes to a career in the medical field. I aspire to become an orthopedic surgeon, and this major will allow me to reach my goal of attending medical school to be able to help others.
Do you have advice for other transfers who haven’t committed to a school yet?
My advice is to have options and an open mind. Make sure to visit different schools and give yourself choices to pick from that can help you decide where you want to attend.
What is one thing about Rowan itself that you liked?
One thing about Rowan that I liked is the various clubs they have to offer and variety of classes that they have available to students. It makes me feel so grateful and thrilled to be able to attend such an amazing university!
