Today we feature incoming first year and first-generation college student Maria Celeste Lopez Vasquez. Maria will major in Exploratory Studies and commute from Camden, NJ (Camden County). Maria attended Camden Academy Charter High School.

Welcome to Rowan! Could you share with us one thing you are looking forward in college?

In college, I’m looking forward to getting to find people with similar interests along with getting to do research!

What is one hobby, activity, sport or club you were a part of in high school that you’d like to continue in college?

Sadly, I was not part of any sports in high school, but I’d love to try out for soccer, tennis, and softball, along with a few other sports clubs. I have lots of interest in cultural and pre-med clubs along with other clubs for entertainment (i.e. 3D Printing Club and American Sigh Language Club).

Is there anything you’re hoping to discover about yourself in college?

I hope to definitely grow a couple of new skills whether that be through classes, clubs or sports. I definitely would like to try some of my current interests like learning a new language.

What majors are you considering and why?

I’m considering ChemE and Biochemistry. ChemE interests me because it will allow me all the tools necessary to dive into what I like to do — making things more efficient, better for the environment, and everything science! As for biochemistry, I think it’s a great major that’ll allow me to get an understanding of chemical/biological processes.

Currently, I’m an Exploratory Studies major and I can’t wait to figure out what major suits me best in the long run. (Fingers crossed!)

I do know I tend to like a variety of things, so being an exploratory studies will help with that decision process whether it is one of these two above majors or a different one!

Did you tour Rowan or attend any virtual events?

Yes! I got to do a private tour with my ENTIRE FAMILY! I know I loved how personalized it was and it truly felt amazing to be there and be part of the welcoming environment Rowan provides. I got to go into the engineering building and it’s awesome!

Do you have advice for other high school seniors who haven’t committed to a school yet?

Just go with your gut! You might be indecisive right now and think you made the wrong choice or can’t make a choice right now, but just let things flow. Let it take you to new heights!

What is one thing about Rowan itself that you liked?

How I can get world-class education at such an affordable price! (Also… the research!)
