Today we speak with Greg Scharen, a freshman journalism major from Middletown, Monmouth County, who lives on campus in Mullica Hall. He will share his #PROFspective with us on what it’s like to be a Rowan University student and how he’s getting the most out of his college experience as a Rowan Prof.

Why did you choose your major?: I choose journalism as my major because I have always had a very strong passion for news regarding: politics, sports, local, music and art and even space. I have always wanted to present facts to the people so they could learn from what they are being told.

One reason why you chose Rowan?: The main reason I chose Rowan was because of the distance from home. I am very close to my family so being staying close to them was a major priority! Rowan is great because it is far enough away from home that I feel I have my “college” experience, but I can be right home in two hours.

My Typical Day as a Rowan Student

Mondays for most people seem to be the worst day of the week. Not for me. Mondays are usually one of my favorite days. My schedule is very structured on Mondays and I never feel overwhelmed by my schedule.

I usually do not wake up on Monday until about 10:00 a.m. because I have later classes. This isGreg sits on a bench inside of Robinson Hall very beneficial to me because I can plan most of my day around this. I go to the main cafe in the Chamberlain Student Center to eat in the morning and then make my way to the Campbell Library to work on assignments I know are due later in the week. I really do not mind working in the library because of the environment there, plus I have headphones in to help me focus on my work. I would say though try to find a spot near a window, you never know when an inspiration will be out there!

Usually around the time I finish my work in the library it’s 12:30 p.m. I usually head back to my room in Mullica Hall and play some video games (usually Fifa 17), and relax my mind until my first class, American Government, in Robinson Hall. I head over to Robinson around 1:45 p.m. so I can get to class about five minutes early and prepare before my professor starts his lecture. After this class, I head over to the Student Center and try to get a burrito for lunch from the Prof’s Place. I always speed walk over there because the line for the burritos after the 2 o’clock classes is usually crazy! After consuming my great burrito, I go back to Robinson Hall and read for my 5 p.m. class, History of Popular Music. I really enjoy that class as we learn all about great music and listen to classic music, so that class seemingly flies by. Afterwards I’ll see where my friends are at and meet up with them for dinner, usually at Jersey Mike’s in the Student Center or Tony Lukes on Rowan Boulevard.

At night my friends and I hang out in either Holly Pointe or Magnolia Hall. We just hang playing video games, working on homework, watching TV, and talk about our day. Then I end my day by heading back to my dorm, planning what my day for tomorrow will entail.

We are #RowanPROUD and we are Rowan Profs! Not exactly sure what a Prof is? It’s our owl mascot, Whoo RU. Read about him here
