Homecoming weekend couldn’t officially start without the annual Homecoming Block Party. Friday, Oct. 7, Hollybush Mansion’s front lawn was transformed into a massive celebration of school and national pride with the 2016 theme, PROFlympics. Complete with food tru
cks, inflatables, and giveaways, this year’s homecoming catered to students and families alike.
Upon entering, students were met with a welcoming committee made up of RAH (Rowan After Hours) student workers and given $10 in food tickets and a snazzy hand-stamp.
Seven food trucks served students a multicultural menu. From French crepes to Mediterranean pita and hummus, and classic favorites from the Mobile Diner, there were plenty of options. My personal favorite—the totally Instagram-worthy sushi burritos from Philly’s famous Hai Street Kitchen.
The most popular venue seemed to be Aunt Martha’s Famous Funnel Cakes, serving up hot fried dough with powdered sugar. The lemonade and fried Oreos drew crowds of hungry Rowan students for hours.
Of course you can’t have food without drinks! Glassboro’s own Landmark Americana ran a beer garden featuring some of their popular fall brews for the over 21 crowd.
Once their bellies were full of carnival classics, students took part in high-energy inflatables, including a massive blow-up hamster ball! Face painting, balloon art, and tents from local businesses rounded out the event and students seemed to love it.
Senior Kyle Thomas talked to us about Rowan’s commitment to student life: “Free stuff is always awesome. But it’s actually really great to see this type of event and everyone having a good time.”
The event drew in neighborhood families as well as alumni and their children. Rowan After Hours (RAH) staff member Ellie Leick was excited at the prospect of opening the event to the community: “I’m happy to see families, and a lot of alumni and faculty here.”
With the sights and sounds of the “Old City Rock and Roll” band and DJs playing in the background, the 2016 Homecoming Block Party was definitely a PROFlympic-sized success.
